Ngozi N. Joe-Ikechebelu - MD, PhD (in view)

Biography

Ngozi Joe-Ikechebelu is a sub-Saharan African woman, wife, and mother, who professes in the Department of Community Medicine/Primary Health Care, Faculty of Clinical Medicine at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Amaku-Awka.

She migrated to Canada to pursue her postgraduate program in 2017, where she is a doctoral candidate in the interdisciplinary social dimension of health program in the department of Public Health and Social Policy, Faculty of human and social development at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. With her background in Community Medicine (now Preventive Medicine & Public Health), and general medical practice, she practices as a physician, of over two decades, in the two tertiary health institutions in Anambra State, Nigeria. At these institutions, she has worked with persons living with HIV at the clinic and community levels, in addition to private general medical practice. She received her MPH and M.Sc. from the University of Birmingham and University of Nigeria. Ngozi's current research uses participatory visual research tools to focus on intersecting social and structural determinants of health with sub-Saharan African women living with HIV in British Columbia with a disprivileged community-based organization. As an active member of Community-Based Health Equity Research (CHER) group at the University of Victoria, Ngozi is involved in the monthly activities concerning health equity issues of marginalized communities.

Ngozi has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and have delivered over 50 presentations locally, nationally, and internationally in public presentation events and conferences. She received fund award sponsorship from Haggai institute, USA for a women leadership training program in Singapore. For her PhD research, she was awarded funding from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TeTFUND) of the Federal Government of Nigeria. She is a recipient of various research funding award from Canadian Institutes for Research (CIHR), Vancouver Foundation (VF), Dalla Lana School of Public Health, CAHR, and Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). Also, she leads the Nigeria-Canada Research Partnership, a relatively new addition of the country partnership program of the Canadian Association for Global Health (CAGH) on equity centered local solutions on impacts of climate change on health. This partnership integrates two initiatives, the Nigeria Coalition for Eco Social Health Research and the Nigeria Working.

Within the community in Canada, she volunteers with the Victory chapel women across all identities for health and wellness. She serves on the board of directors for the AIDS Vancouver Island Health and Community Services (AVI) and the Victory Hill Child Care Society in Victoria. Of note, Ngozi is eternally grateful to the land for the opportunity of allyship extended to her to work with ACPNet and other future project, as well as the humbling favour to collaborate with and hold up the challenging complex needs of my community.
